Ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy allows doctors to identify problematic veins that aren’t visible on the skin surface by monitoring veins on an ultrasound screen during the sclerotherapy procedure. With this technology, Dr. Jimenez is able to guide an extremely fine and nearly painless needle into the diseased vein. He then injects a small amount of a sclerosing solution into the affected veins. This causes an irritation to the inner lining of the vein, which causes the veins to gently dry up and become absorbed by the body’s natural healing response, thus closing the vein. Because blood flow is shifted to healthy veins, sclerotherapy can improve the venous circulation in the legs.
